Wither Tracing Guide
A proper wither tracing helps us recommend the best saddle fit for your horse. Follow these steps carefully to ensure accurate measurements.
What You’ll Need
- Flexible curve ruler or wire
- Paper or cardboard
- Marker
How to Take a Wither Tracing
Step 1: Position Your Horse
Place your horse on level ground, standing square and relaxed.
Step 2: Find the Correct Location
Locate the back edge of the shoulder blade (scapula). Take the tracing about 2–3 fingers behind this point.
Step 3: Shape the Curve
Gently mold the flexible ruler over the withers, following the natural shape without applying pressure.
Step 4: Transfer to Paper
Carefully transfer the shape onto paper or cardboard without changing the curve.

Step 5: Label Your Tracing
Include your horse’s name, date, and clearly mark orientation.
Important Notes
- For hard-to-fit horses, take additional tracings 2” and 3” behind the first one
- Choosing a slightly wider tree is usually better than one that is too narrow
- Poor saddle fit can create pressure points and restrict movement
Why Wither Tracing Matters
Every horse has a unique shape. A proper tracing allows us to recommend a saddle that improves comfort, balance, and performance.
Incorrect fit can lead to discomfort, restricted movement, and long-term issues.
